Will North American consoles work in the Gulf?
By Tech Trove · Updated · 4 min read
Quick answer
Yes. North American PS5, Nintendo Switch and Xbox consoles work in the Gulf. Their power supplies accept 100–240 V, so only the plug differs and a local cord or adapter solves that. PS5 games are not region-locked, Switch consoles play games from other regions, and most Xbox Series titles are region-free. The main difference is warranty, which is usually regional.
How does each console handle regions, power and accounts?
| Console | Game regions | Store purchases | Power and plug |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 | Not region-locked | Follow the PSN account region | 100–240 V, US two-pin cord; swap for a local figure-8 (C7) cord |
| Nintendo Switch | Plays games from other regions | Follow the Nintendo Account region | Dock adapter 100–240 V, US plug; use a plug adapter or local USB-C PD adapter |
| Xbox Series X|S | Most titles are not region-locked | Follow the Microsoft account region | Check the cord type for the model on your order |
| Meta Quest | Not applicable | Follow the Meta account | Charger 100–240 V, US plug; use a plug adapter or local USB-C charger |
What plug and voltage does each Gulf country use?
Budget for this if you sell to end customers: a retail buyer expects a console to plug straight in. Tell your supplier if you want local-plug cords quoted with the order.
| Country | Voltage | Plug |
|---|---|---|
| United Arab Emirates | 230 V | Type G |
| Saudi Arabia | 230 V, 60 Hz | Type G |
| Kuwait | 240 V | Type G (Type C also common) |
| Qatar | 240 V | Type G |
| Bahrain | 230 V | Type G |
| Oman | 240 V | Type G |
What about warranty?
Manufacturer warranties are usually regional, so a local service centre may not accept a North American unit. Importers normally handle this by offering their own store warranty and pricing it in. Dead-on-arrival units are a separate matter: at Tech Trove they are replaced or credited under our B2B returns policy.
Do other electronics work the same way?
Not always, and this is where importers get caught out. Consoles and most USB-charged devices have wide-range power supplies. Mains-powered home appliances sold in North America may be built for 120 V only and cannot simply be plugged into a 230 V socket. Always check the rating label or the SKU details before you order appliances for a Gulf market.
Common questions
Can a customer in Dubai use a local PSN account on a North American PS5?
Yes. PlayStation Store purchases follow the PSN account region, not the console, so buyers can use their local account.
Will a console designed for 60 Hz power work on 50 Hz in the UAE?
Yes for the PS5, whose power supply accepts 230 V at 50 or 60 Hz. Check the rating label on any other product.
